FINA Men’s World League Intercontinental Cup in Lima

USA – Australia 7:6 (2:2, 1:0, 3:2, 1:2)

The competition played in Lima (Perù) ended yesterday with some surprise in the final
results. The final event was between the USA and Australia and went to the Americans
who defeated Australia by a 7-6 goal. The match was very tight especially in the first
period. The USA responded to the Australian advantage with Pavillard (voted as MVP of
the tournament) and overturned the score. Then the Australian player Nathan Power drew
for the 2-2 at the end of the first period. The Americans took over in the second and third
period by scoring three goals in a row that put them on 5-2 in the score. The Australians
have shortened the gap but never came to a draw. The third period saw the USA lead with
the result in favor of 6 to 4 thanks to an amazing performance made by their player Dodd.
In the last period the USA have gained +3 with Gruwell but Australia did not demoralized
and tried again to shortened the gap by scoring two goals. The American defense held and
managed to keep the only goal advantage until the end for the final victory.

Canada – Brazil 8:11 (1:3, 3:2, 3:2, 1:4)

Great surprise in the final for the third place that was assigned to Brazil which thus earned
the historic bronze medal. After a one-goal defeat (11-10) in the group stage, Brazil took
their revenge, thus obtaining the medal and an important placing. After a first period that
went in favor of the Brazilians who took the lead 3 to 1, in the two central periods Canada
grabbed the tie and overturned the score with D’Souza up to 7 to 5. Brazil found the tie at
the end of the third period. In the fourth period, Canada again took the lead again with D
‘Souza but incredibly the green-gold team scored 4 goals (Chappini 2, Coutinho and R.
Real), ending the match with a 11:8 victory.

Luke Pavillard (Australia) was voted the MVP of the tournament and his teammate Blake
Edwards was the best scorer (20 goals). Drew Holland (USA) was the best goalkeeper of
